All the tubes we manufacture are made of paperboard. There are no plastic tubes in our product range.
The difference comes from the production stage at which the tube is used. POY (partially oriented yarn) is the intermediate product obtained during synthetic yarn production. DTY (draw textured yarn) is formed when that yarn is drawn and textured. Because winding tension and full package weight differ between the two stages, tube dimensions and strength are set accordingly.
Three dimensions are decisive: inner diameter, length and wall thickness. Inner diameter follows the spindle of your winding machine, length follows your winding width, and wall thickness follows winding tension and full package weight. Paperboard is by nature affected by moisture. For lasting strength we recommend storing tubes in a dry, enclosed space, without direct contact with the floor.
We recommend storage in a dry, enclosed area, palletised and raised off the floor. Tubes should be protected from direct sunlight, rain and high humidity, and care should be taken not to crush them when stacking.
Yes. Paperboard tubes can be fed into the paper recycling stream. They are easy to separate at the end of their service life.

The inner diameter is set by whatever the tube mounts onto: the spindle of the winding machine, the carrier in the creel, or an adapter. Tolerance is critical. If the inner diameter is too tight the tube will not fit, or will only fit under force; if it is too loose the tube moves on the spindle, the winding drifts off centre and the package does not form correctly.
Length is set by the winding width. If the tube is too long, empty sections remain at the ends and these take knocks and get crushed in handling. If it is too short, the yarn overruns the end of the tube and the winding breaks down. In some applications a tube a few millimetres longer is chosen deliberately, to protect the yarn ends.
Wall thickness determines the strength of the tube. Three factors are decisive: winding tension, full package weight and stacking load. With an insufficient wall the tube ovalises during winding and the winding geometry breaks down. An unnecessarily thick wall means wasted material, added weight and higher cost.
There are three common causes. The first is winding tension exceeding the strength of the wall. The second is an inner diameter that is too loose for the spindle, so the tube drifts off centre throughout winding. The third is moisture: damp paperboard loses strength, and a tension that was previously fine begins to cause problems. If some tubes from the same batch cause problems and others do not, the cause is usually storage.
BCF stands for Bulk Continuous Filament. It is produced from synthetic polymers, chiefly polypropylene, and gains bulk through drawing and texturing. It is the most widely used yarn type in machine-made carpet production. Because it is bulky and coarse, winding tension and package weight are high, and the strength expected of the tube rises accordingly.
Both are synthetic filament yarns; the difference lies in the degree of drawing. POY (partially oriented yarn) is only partially oriented at the spinning stage and is an intermediate product destined for further processing. FDY (fully drawn yarn) is fully drawn on the spinning line and is ready for direct use. DTY is POY that has been textured.
Yes. Printing can be used for a company name, product code, size information or batch number. It is important that the printed layer leaves no mark on the first layers of yarn and that the ink does not transfer to the yarn; for this reason the printing option is assessed together with the type of yarn to be wound.
Colour provides differentiation on the production line: you can tell product type, customer or production batch apart simply by looking at the tube. This prevents the wrong package going to the wrong machine and speeds up sorting in the warehouse. To use it effectively, we recommend coding by a single dimension and standardising it across shifts.
Paperboard tubes have no fixed expiry date; what matters is storage conditions. Tubes kept in a dry, enclosed space and raised off the floor remain usable for a long time. Even so, we recommend operating a first-in, first-out principle in stock rotation, and visually checking a few tubes from long-stored batches before use.
A tube that has already been wound is not as strong as it was when new. Tubes that are clean and show no visible damage may be used to a limited extent in some internal processes, but this is not recommended for critical applications involving high tension and heavy packages. At the end of their service life, tubes can be fed into the paper recycling stream.
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation covers not only packaging produced within the EU but all packaging placed on the EU market. Manufacturers exporting to Europe are advised to be prepared for information requests from their customers regarding the composition and recyclability of the materials they use. Paperboard tubes are advantageous in this respect, as they can be fed into the paper recycling stream.
If your working conditions have changed, the size may need reviewing: if you have moved to heavier packages, increased winding tension, started using a different yarn type, or raised your stack height. If deformation began after any of these changes, that is usually the cause. Share your new conditions and we can determine the right size together.
