ApplicationSynthetic yarn production

Our POY tubes are made of paperboard for winding partially oriented yarn. There are no plastic tubes in our product range.

What is POY?

POY stands for Partially Oriented Yarn. It is the intermediate product that emerges at the first stage of synthetic yarn production. The polymer is melted, extruded through spinnerets into filaments, cooled and wound. At this stage the molecular orientation of the filaments is only partially complete.

POY is not a finished product on its own; it usually goes on to texturing or drawing to become DTY or FDY.

What makes this stage distinctive?

Two points stand out in POY winding:

Package weight. POY packages are generally heavier than those at later stages. The tube carries both this weight and the load of anything stacked above it.

Storage time. POY packages may wait in storage before entering the texturing process. Throughout that period the tube must hold its shape and strength, which makes warehouse humidity more critical on the POY side.

Sizing

A tube is defined by three dimensions: inner diameter, length and wall thickness.

  • Inner diameter is set by the spindle of the winding machine.
  • Length is set by the winding width.
  • Wall thickness is set by winding tension, full package weight and stacking conditions.

Because package weights on the POY side are generally higher, the compressive strength expected of the wall may differ from that of a DTY tube.

Custom sizes

Our POY tubes are produced in custom sizes. Dimensions and strength are determined with your winding tension, full package weight and storage conditions in mind.

Printed and coloured tubes can also be supplied.

How to proceed

Simply share details of the machine and yarn you work with, or the dimensions of your current tube. Once the size is confirmed, we can supply a sample.

Storage

We recommend storage in a dry, enclosed area, palletised and raised off the floor, protected from direct sunlight, rain and high humidity.
