DTY Tubes

High-strength paperboard tubes for winding draw textured yarn (DTY).
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Our DTY tubes are made of paperboard for winding draw textured yarn. There are no plastic tubes in our product range.
What is DTY?
DTY stands for Draw Textured Yarn. It is produced by drawing and texturing synthetic filament yarn. The texturing process gives the filaments a permanent crimp: the yarn gains bulk, elasticity and covering power. It is widely used in apparel, home textiles and upholstery fabrics.
What is expected of the tube at this stage?
At the texturing output the yarn is wound at high speed under a defined tension. The tube is expected to:
- retain its roundness throughout winding
- have a surface smooth enough not to damage the first layers of yarn
- have ends that are cleanly cut and free of crushing
- keep its shape during handling and stacking
Sizing
A tube is defined by three dimensions: inner diameter, length and wall thickness.
- Inner diameter is set by the spindle of the winding machine. Too tight and the tube will not fit; too loose and the winding drifts off centre.
- Length is set by the winding width. Excess length leaves unprotected sections at the ends; insufficient length allows the yarn to overrun.
- Wall thickness is set by winding tension and the weight of the full package. An insufficient wall leads to ovalisation; an excessive wall adds needless weight and cost.
These three dimensions are not independent of one another; they are assessed together.
Custom sizes
Our DTY tubes are not tied to a fixed catalogue size. Inner diameter, length and wall thickness are determined according to your texturing machine, your winding tension and the weight of your full package.
Printed and coloured tubes can also be supplied.
How to proceed
Simply share the dimensions of your current tube, a photograph of it, or details of the machine you use. Once the size is confirmed, we can supply a sample.
Storage
Paperboard is affected by moisture. To preserve strength, we recommend storing tubes in a dry, enclosed space, raised off the floor.
