The tube is a small but decisive part of the production line. A wrong choice comes back as deformation during winding, yarn loss, machine stoppages and damage in transit. These are the headings to look at when making a choice.

1. Inner diameter

This is the dimension that determines how the tube seats on the machine spindle. Falling outside tolerance leads either to play between tube and spindle, or to the tube not fitting at all. The dimension should be set according to the winding machine in use.

2. Length

It must accommodate the quantity of yarn to be wound and the winding width of the machine. A tube longer than necessary is both a waste of material and a loss of space in shipping.

3. Wall thickness

This determines the load-bearing capacity of the tube. If winding tension is high or the full package is heavy, insufficient wall thickness can lead to crushing and inward collapse.

4. Winding speed and revolutions

On machines running at high speed, the balance and regularity of the tube become critical. An unbalanced tube creates vibration, which in turn lowers winding quality.

5. Yarn type

DTY, POY, carpet yarn and knitting yarns each have a different winding character. Tension, weight and winding pattern change; the tube should be chosen accordingly.

6. Moisture and storage

Paperboard tubes are affected by moisture. Storing them dry, enclosed and out of contact with the floor extends their life. A tube left in a damp environment loses strength.

7. Continuity of supply

Finding a tube whose dimensions fit is one thing; being able to obtain that same size at the same quality, consistently, is just as important. Batch-to-batch variation creates problems on the production line.
